Shopping In Paris: How To Get That Classic Parisian Look

Parisian style is synonymous with sophistication, simplicity, and an inherent sense of chic that many aspire to emulate. Whether you’re strolling along the Seine or sitting in a cozy café, there’s an unmistakable allure to how Parisians dress. But what exactly defines this style? Let’s delve deeper:

In essence, dressing like a Parisian is about understanding oneself, being comfortable in one’s skin, and valuing timeless elegance over transient trends. It’s a style, but more importantly, it’s a mindset.

The Art of Dressing Like a Parisian

Parisian style is synonymous with sophistication, simplicity, and an inherent sense of chic that many aspire to emulate. Whether you’re strolling along the Seine or sitting in a cozy café, there’s an unmistakable allure to how Parisians dress. But what exactly defines this style? Let’s delve deeper:

Timelessness Over Trends
While the rest of the world might chase after every new fashion trend, Parisians prefer timeless staples. Think classic white shirts, tailored trousers, and the iconic little black dress. They believe in investing in quality pieces that last years rather than fleeting seasonal items.

Simplicity is the Key
Parisian style isn’t about being ostentatious or flashy. Instead, it’s about understated elegance. Neutral colors dominate the palette – blacks, whites, beiges, and navy blues. This not only ensures versatility but also adds a touch of class to any outfit.

Quality Over Quantity
Parisians would rather have a few high-quality items in their wardrobe than piles of disposable fashion. They often lean towards well-crafted pieces, valuing the fabric and the craftsmanship over the brand name.

Mastering the Art of Effortlessness
Ever heard of the term “je ne sais quoi”? It’s that indefinable quality that makes Parisian style so elusive. Parisians have a knack for making it seem like they’ve just thrown an outfit together, yet they look impeccably chic. It’s all about looking natural and not overdone.

Accessorize Wisely
While the outfit might be simple, Parisians know how to make a statement with accessories. Be it a bold red lipstick, a signature scent, a chic hat, or a piece of statement jewelry, these subtle touches can elevate a basic look to something special.

Comfort Meets Style
Parisians walk—a lot. So, while they appreciate the allure of high heels, ballet flats like those from Repetto or sleek sneakers are just as popular for everyday wear. They merge comfort with style, ensuring they always look their best without compromising on practicality.

Outerwear as a Statement
Paris, especially in the colder months, can be quite chilly. Parisians use this as an opportunity to showcase their flair for fashion with trench coats, tailored blazers, and chic scarves. Outerwear isn’t just functional; it’s an integral part of their outfit.

Minimalism in Beauty
When it comes to makeup, less is more. A Parisian’s beauty routine is often minimal – a dab of rouge on the cheeks, a swipe of mascara, and perhaps a bold lip. The focus is on healthy, glowing skin rather than layers of makeup.

Confidence is the Best Outfit
Above all, what sets Parisians apart is their confidence. They wear their outfits with pride, irrespective of brands or trends. They know their strengths and play to them, ensuring they always feel good in what they wear.

In essence, dressing like a Parisian is about understanding oneself, being comfortable in one’s skin, and valuing timeless elegance over transient trends. It’s a style, but more importantly, it’s a mindset.

With so many options every where you turn in Paris, the question is Where do you shop in Paris to look like a Parisian?

We will dive into that question in a bit but first…

The reason I fell madly in love with Paris completely has to do with fashion. Since high school I poured over every fashion magazine I could get my hands on. I’d dream of one day walking into Chanel, or stroll the streets in the 6th armed with a ton of beautiful shopping bags. When I studied Fashion Merchandising in college, I did my final on Yves Saint Laurent. I wanted some day to go to the city that is the fashion capitol of the world.

Let’s face it, women around the world aspire to copy that effortless Parisian style. There is no better place to try and capture that style than in Paris. While I am normally a bargain shopper, I do splurge a bit shopping in Paris. I have a little list of things I want to buy when I am there.  I do tons of research whenever I travel and love to find the perfect things to bring back when I go places that tell me that I have been there. When I wear things I buy on my travels it takes me back to the place I bought them. I get a warm fuzzy feeling when I put on the first scarf I bought in Paris 12 years ago.

With the age of Amazon and online shopping, it is easy to purchase things from around the world to be delivered to your front door. What fun is that when you can shop in an actual boutique in Paris.

It kind of amazes me to see so many shops in Paris when brick and mortar stores here in the US are closing everyday. Shopping in Paris is an art form in itself and- why not buy an umbrella in a shop that sells just umbrellas?

This world-famous brand began in 1947 when Rose Repetto made her first pair of ballerina shoes in a tiny workshop in Paris.  Since then Repetto has grown to include many styles of shoes, along with handbags, dance-wear, women’s clothing, and perfume. It is the ballerina in a wide variety of styles and colors that are a staple in the French woman’s closet. Slip on a pair and you will feel light as air. Trust me when they say they mold to your feet. I have a gray pair and they truly do. I save them for special occasions and when I want to feel very French! I’m not going to lie, these are a definite splurge, treat them right and they will last forever. I keep them safely tucked away in their dust bag during our Wisconsin winter, but I am tempted to frame them just to admire them.

Le Bon Marche

This Rue de Sevres staple is Paris’s oldest department store.  A destination in itself, this department store features upscale brands.  Come browse the merchandise or just take in the beauty and ambiance of the interior.  The ground floor features the luxury brand boutiques, and the beauty and accessories departments.  The lower ground floor features Men’s, first floor is devoted to fashion and lingerie, second floor is home furnishings, and the third floor is the children’s department. While you cannot get just one essential item here, you can do some style watching at an outdoor cafe while in Paris and go to Le Bon Marche and look for those items that stand out to you. I find the best way to copy that Parisian chic, is to observe, then adapt what you see to your own tastes. After you are done shopping stop in next door and check out the massive Le Grande Epicerie. This food hall has everything you can imagine to tempt your taste buds!

For The Bargain Shopper

Remember, the key to bargain shopping in Paris, like many places, is patience and persistence. With a keen eye and a bit of luck, you can score some fantastic deals in the fashion capital of the world!

It’s the perfect place to pick up quality French products at reasonable prices. Plus, their in-house fashion brand often surprises with trendy pieces that capture the essence of casual Parisian chic. Promod is an inexpensive chain store with multiple locations in Paris. I just happened to stumble upon this store. I was so pleasantly surprised at the prices! This is one of the world’s largest and oldest flea markets. Located in the 18th arrondissement, it’s a labyrinth of stalls offering everything from antiques to vintage clothing. Haggling is a must!

Vintage Stores and Thrift Stores

Time Out Paris has a great list of vintage and second-hand shops in Paris. Next time I head to Paris, I am hoping to do more consignment shopping. I’m told there are often times bargains to be had. Sometimes you need to spend a little time and dig to find those gems, but what better way to spend an afternoon of shopping?

You can also turn to Yelp for some second-hand shopping recommendations. This list of the ten best local thrift stores in Paris will get you started.

The Neighborhood Marche

Every neighborhood in Paris has a marche or market. Many of these weekly markets offer not only food, but clothing and accessories, antiques, and other items. If you want to get an authentic Paris experience, hit up the market in the neighborhood you are staying in. On my last trip to Paris I went to the Marche Monge in the 5th and left with a cute pink leather purse and a couple of beautiful scarves that were of exceptional quality and inexpensive. It a fun experience! You can Google markets in Paris and find a list. Choose one that is near you, or pick one based on reviews and recommendations.

While the places mentioned are all favorites to me, I’m sure the list can go on and on. Paris is made up of a treasure trove of shops, from the tiny hole-in-the-wall boutiques to the massive department stores. I’d love to hear your opinions on where to go to get that classic French style!

Mistakes To Avoid While Shopping In Paris

Being Intimidated by Salespeople:
French salespeople, particularly in high-end boutiques, can come off as aloof. Don’t be discouraged. Engage with them politely (ALWAYS SAY BONJOUR WHEN YOU ENTER A STORE), and you’ll often find they’re very helpful.

Not Researching VAT Refunds:
Non-EU tourists are eligible for a VAT (Value Added Tax) refund on many purchases. Failing to understand how it works or forgetting to get the necessary paperwork in the store can mean missing out on these savings.

Shopping Only on the Champs-Élysées:
While this iconic avenue has many flagship stores, it’s also one of the busiest and most touristy places. Venture into other neighborhoods like Le Marais or Saint-Germain-des-Prés for a more authentic shopping experience.

Overlooking Local Boutiques:
While Paris is home to renowned global brands, some of its best offerings are in its local boutiques. These shops often carry unique items and provide a taste of authentic French style.

Not Checking Sale Seasons:
Paris has two main sale seasons: winter (January) and summer (June-July). Planning your trip during these times can mean substantial discounts, but also be prepared for larger crowds.

Forgetting to Try Before Buying:
Sizes can vary significantly between brands and regions. Always try clothing on to ensure a proper fit, even if you think you know your size.

Ignoring Return Policies:
Many stores in Paris have strict return and exchange policies. Always check the return policy, especially if you’re uncertain about a purchase.

Not Setting a Budget:
It’s easy to get carried away in the Parisian shopping scene. Setting a budget beforehand can prevent overspending and buyer’s remorse.

Failing to Explore Vintage Stores:
Paris is a goldmine for vintage fashion. Overlooking these shops means missing out on unique and often affordable pieces that carry a touch of Parisian history.

Dressing Too Casually:
While you don’t need to be in haute couture, dressing presentably can make a difference in the shopping experience, especially in upscale boutiques.

Being Closed to Negotiations:
While it’s not common in big brand stores, in places like flea markets, haggling is part of the experience. Don’t be afraid to negotiate prices, but always do so respectfully.

Not Carrying Cash:
While most places accept cards, some smaller boutiques, market stalls, or vintage shops might prefer or only accept cash.

Overlooking Artisanal Shops:
Paris is brimming with craftsmen creating everything from jewelry to leather goods. Not visiting these artisans means missing out on bespoke items that are uniquely Parisian.

Paris, the world’s fashion capital, offers an unparalleled shopping experience. By being mindful of these common mistakes, you can ensure that your shopping expedition is as delightful and efficient as possible. After all, shopping in Paris isn’t just about the items you take home; it’s about the memories you create along the way.

Shopping in Paris is more than just a pastime; it’s an experience. Immerse yourself in the local culture, trends, and etiquette, and you’ll not only have a memorable shopping spree but also blend seamlessly with the stylish Parisians.
